My expe­ri­ence in Med­ical Devices came after years of hos­pi­tal vol­un­teer­ing in com­bi­na­tion with obses­sion over high-tech­nol­o­gy. I was the youngest co-op stu­dent at Verathon Med­ical in my 2^nd year of Uni­ver­si­ty at SFU. I had spent 8 months assist­ing with R&D (devel­op­ing and test­ing pro­to­types), and bring­ing find­ings into con­trolled and reg­u­lat­ed pro­duc­tion process­es, cul­mi­nat­ing in the launch of the ​“GlideScope Tita­ni­um” line of prod­ucts. Soon after, I end­ed up at Novadaq (now Stryk­er) to assist in reg­u­lar upgrades of the line of ​“SPY” flu­o­res­cence imag­ing devices, as well as devel­op­ing a nov­el line of ​“pin­point” min­i­mal­ly inva­sive surgery devices.

I fin­ished my degree at SFU in Bio­med­ical Engi­neer­ing, under the Fac­ul­ty of Applied Sci­ence, by com­plet­ing an Hon­ours The­sis on EEG sig­nal dis­tri­b­u­tion across the human brain. This the­sis intro­duced my to Ryan D’Ar­cy, and ulti­mate­ly led to my net­work at HealthTech Connex.

At HealthTech Con­nex, I joined a team of bright-eyed engi­neers and soft­ware devel­op­ers to help with a exe­cut­ing a sys­tem for trans­lat­ing ear­ly research con­cepts into a ful­ly licensed med­ical device, the Neu­ro­Catch Plat­form. My orig­i­nal role was Bio­med­ical Engi­neer, writ­ing code, test pipelines, build­ing equip­ment, and writ­ing up design doc­u­ments. How­ev­er, the com­pa­ny need­ed more high lev­el guid­ance, and inter­nal knowl­edge on med­ical device devel­op­ment. My expe­ri­ence at med­ical device com­pa­nies allowed me to take on that lead­er­ship and ini­ti­ate sys­tem­at­ic changes so that all devel­op­ment could occur flu­id­ly under the strict reg­u­la­tions of the med­ical device mar­kets around the world. I thus stepped away from engi­neer­ing and accept­ed the full respon­si­bil­i­ties of project man­ag­er as a result!
