My experience in Medical Devices came after years of hospital volunteering in combination with obsession over high-technology. I was the youngest co-op student at Verathon Medical in my 2nd year of University at SFU. I had spent 8 months assisting with R&D (developing and testing prototypes), and bringing findings into controlled and regulated production processes, culminating in the launch of the “GlideScope Titanium” line of products. Soon after, I ended up at Novadaq (now Stryker) to assist in regular upgrades of the line of “SPY” fluorescence imaging devices, as well as developing a novel line of “pinpoint” minimally invasive surgery devices.
I finished my degree at SFU in Biomedical Engineering, under the Faculty of Applied Science, by completing an Honours Thesis on EEG signal distribution across the human brain. This thesis introduced my to Ryan D’Arcy, and ultimately led to my network at HealthTech Connex.
At HealthTech Connex, I joined a team of bright-eyed engineers and software developers to help with a executing a system for translating early research concepts into a fully licensed medical device, the NeuroCatch Platform. My original role was Biomedical Engineer, writing code, test pipelines, building equipment, and writing up design documents. However, the company needed more high level guidance, and internal knowledge on medical device development. My experience at medical device companies allowed me to take on that leadership and initiate systematic changes so that all development could occur fluidly under the strict regulations of the medical device markets around the world. I thus stepped away from engineering and accepted the full responsibilities of project manager as a result!
